Béal Beo

Recordings from the National Folklore Collection

About Béal Beo

BÉAL BEO is an initiative to publish on the web a selection of the unique collection of early wax cylinder (Ediphone) sound recordings, in Irish and English, held in the National Folklore Collection, University College Dublin. These early recordings were assembled mainly during the lifetime of the Irish Folklore Commission (1935-1971) and later passed into the care of UCD.

The wider public will for the first time be able to search and listen to a variety of conversations relating to local and national history, and rare examples of music, song and story from the early years of the twentieth century, recorded throughout Ireland. A web interface enables users to access audio samples, transcriptions and relevant translations. A range of other digitization projects will be hosted on this site as they become available.
